Outlander has captured both the hearts and imagination of many and highlights the beauty of Scotland.

Here are some of the top Scottish  locations selected for the filming of the series, which are gorgeous on screen and truly stunning to see in person.

1. George Square and Pollok Country Park, Glasgow

Starting in the centre of Glasgow, George Square was the location to film Frank and Clare’s proposal scenes set in the 1940s. While Pollok Country Park on the Southside was the stand in for the 1700s Highland fields were Clare collects healing herbs.

2. Doune Castle, Stirlingshire

This imposing medieval stronghold is in the heart of the Stirlingshire countryside has an illustrious film career having appeared in many big budget productions including Game of Thrones and Monty Python & The Holy Grail. Built in the 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany it doubles as Castle Leoch, home of Jamie’s Uncle Colum Mackenzie and his clan.

3. Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, Bo’ness

The museum and historic railway at Bo’ness becomes the hustling & bustling 1940s London train station.

4. Linlithgow Palace, Linlithgow

Once the royal seat of the Stewart kings, this stunning palace in Linlithgow is the film location for the scenes set in Wentworth Prison.

5. Blackness Castle, Linlithgow

Looking out over the Firth of Forth, the 15th century Blackness Castle is referred to as the “ship that never sailed” due to its unusual shape and acts as the Fort William headquarters of “Black Jack” Randall.

6. Midhope House, South Queensferry

This 16th century tower house located near Edinburgh appears in the series as Jamie’s home, Lallybroch or Broch Tuarach. In part ruins, with a derelict interior, this is one to photograph from a distance.

7. Hopetoun House, South Queensferry

This grand stately home in South Queenferry is the seat of the Marquis of Linlithgow, however for Outlander, it doubles as the residence of the Duke of Sandringham.

8. Glencorse Old Kirk, Midlothian

In the foothills of the Pentland Hills lies the 17th century kirk where Claire and Jamie say their “I do’s”.

9. Culross, Dunfermline

Practically unchanged since the 17th century the Royal Burgh of Culross appears in the series as the village of Cranesmuir, the home of Clare’s friend Geillis Duncan.

10. Aberdour Castle, Fife

This beautiful 12th century castle becomes a monastery in the series, Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupré. Definitely one to visit if you enjoy your Scottish history, as it is believed to be the oldest standing stone castle in all of Scotland.

11. Falkland, Fife

Clare and Frank arrive in picturesque Inverness in the series, however in reality these scenes are filmed in the beautiful town of Falkland in the Kingdom of Fife.

12. Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore

The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore appears in Outlander as the Mackenzie Village. It is the ideal location with its beautiful, detailed traditional Highland crofts.

13. Tulloch Ghru, Aviemore

Featuring in both the opening credits and as the woodlands that Claire makes her way through with Jamie and his clansmen in the first episode, this truly stunning location near Aviemore and the Cairngorms is a sight to behold.
